One of the most difficult aspects of building a brick structure is determining how many bricks you will need. Ordering too little can potentially delay your project, while over-ordering is a quick way to throw money down. Bricks are expensive and can quickly add to the cost of your masonry structure.
Quantity
of bricks is directly dependent on:
1. Size of bricks
2. Wall thickness
• Full or 1 brick thick
wall
• Half brick thick wall (partition wall)
3. Mortar thickness.
If you want to know how
many bricks are needed per square meter or square feet, Let me show you easy
ways to work out on brick quantity calculations.
Calculation 1:
Assume
Actual Brick size = 19 x
9 x 9 cm (0.19 × 0.09 × 0.09 m)
Mortar thickness = 10
mm
Wall thickness = whole
or 1 brick thick wall
Volume of 1 brick =
0.20 × 0.10 × 0.10 = 0.002㎥ (with
mortar)
Volume
of brickwork = wall thickness x area of brickwork
Brickwork volume =
0.19 m x 1㎡ = 0.19
Thus,
Number
of bricks = volume of brickwork/ volume of 1 brick
Number of bricks in
sq.m = 0.19 / (0.002) = 95 No.’s (without wastage)
Considering the percentage
of wastage as 10%
So we have,
Number of bricks with
wastage = 95 + 9.5 = 104.5 No.’s
If
wall thickness = half brick thick wall (partition wall)
Then it follows:
Number of bricks with
wastage = 52.25 No’s
Number of bricks without wastage = 47.5 No.’s
Calculation 2:
Assume
Brick size =23 x 11 x 7 cm (0.230 × 0.110 × 0.070 m)
Mortar thickness = 10
mm (0.01 m)
Wall thickness = whole
or 1 brick wall
Volume of 1 brick = 0.240
× 0.120 × 0.080 = 0.002304 ㎥ (with mortar)
Volume of brickwork for
1sq.m = 1 ㎡ x 0.230 m = 0.230
Number of bricks =
volume of brick with mortar / 1 volume of brick
Number of bricks in
1sq.m = 0.230 / 0.002304 = 99.826 No.’s
= 100 No.s approx. (without wastage)
Considering the percentage
of wastage as 10%
So we have,
Number of bricks with
wastage = 99.826 + 9.982 = 109.808 = 110 No.’s approx..
If,
Wall thickness= half brick wall
Then it follows:
Number of bricks with
wastage = 54.904 (55 No.’s)
Number of bricks
without wastage = 49.913 (50 No.’s)
