Sand is a multi-purpose topographic material used in construction. It is known as one of the three basic materials in concrete. The composition of sand is varied. Generally, sand is made of silica which is a common element. It can also come into existence from another sources of minerals such as quartz, limestone or gypsum.

From beds to floodplains to coastlines - we can find sand almost anywhere. The strength of sand has played an important role in everyday life. We use sand practically every other day in the construction field. It acts as a binding source to the concrete.

Some common uses of sand are:

1. Sand paper can be made by gluing sand to a paper.

2. We can use sand to filter water; It acts as an abrasive.

3. We can use sand to give a grip to your painting or wall art by combining 2 cups of paint with or ¾ cup of sand.

4. While bouncing the metal, we can mix sand with an earthen (binder)clay for the frameworks used in casting.

5. Sand can be used to clean oil leaks or any leaks by dredging the sand at that point. Soaking of the material will create flakes, and we can quickly clean up the mess.

6. Sand can be used as a road base which is a protective layer under all roads

7. Many industries use industrial sand to make glass, as foundry sand and abrasive sand.

8. A creative use of sand is serving as a candle holder. We can try to pour some sand before pouring tea lights or any candle into a glass. This keeps the candle stable and prevents rolling by giving the candle an excellent decoration.

9. Adds Texture and aesthetic to any form.

10. Sand acts as a binder in the formation of concrete. It binds all the constituents together.

For Testing:

Slump cone test, Silt content, Water absorption, Bulking of sand
Compaction factor test of concrete
Los Angeles Abrasion test on Aggregates
Determination of maximum dry density and optimum moisture content of soil
