Definition: -

Separating the components of a heterogeneous mixture so that their distribution is not uniform.

Reason: -

Segregation is caused by following five reasons:-

Big difference in the size of the aggregates.

Big difference in specific gravity of aggregates.

Improper handling of concrete.

Vibration of concrete.

Improper grading of aggregates.

Harmful effects due to the segregation of concrete: -

Honey comb of concrete.

High permeability of concrete.

Low compressive strength.

Poor finishing of surfaces.

Control of Segregation: -

We can control the segregation of concrete in the following ways:

By properly selecting the set.

By proper handling of concrete.

Applying controlled vibration.

Adopting leak proof form work.

Differences between:

OPC cement vs PPC cement

Hydraulic lime vs Fatlime

Bolt vs Screw

Concrete vs Mortar

CPM vs PERT

Pier vs Abutment

Culvert vs Bridge

Whole Circle Bearing vs Quadrantal Bearing

Lintel level vs Sill level vs Plinth level

Construction Joint vsExpansion Joint

For Testing:

Slump cone test, Silt content, Water absorption, Bulking of sand
Compaction factor test of concrete
Los Angeles Abrasion test on Aggregates
